I have been following a vegan diet for almost one and a half years. It hasn’t always been easy to know and find the right vegan food replacements though. Even for someone who had been following a vegetarian diet for years, such as myself.
But I have to admit that it’s very exciting to try some new natural plant-based and fruit-based foods. Yesterday, I went to a local turkish store. They have had a lot of exotic foods that I have never tasted before.
One of them is called “Tahin Sesambrei” (translation → Tahini Sesame Paste). These are some useful nutritional information about Tahini that I found on the Wikipedia:
Tahini is an excellent source of copper, manganese and the amino acid methionine. Tahini is a source of the healthy fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.
Tahini made from raw sesame seeds is lower in fat than tahini made from roasted seeds.
Tahini’s relatively high levels of calcium and protein make it a useful addition to vegetarian and vegan diets, as well as to raw food diets when eaten in its unroasted form. Compared to peanut butter, tahini has higher levels of fiber and calcium and lower levels of sugar and saturated fats.
The other one is called “Incir Reçeli” (translation → Fig Jam). I have tasted some figs before but never tasted them as jam. These are some information about the benefits of figs that I’ve found online:
Figs are a great source of vitamin B6, which is responsible for producing mood-boosting serotonin, lowering cholesterol and preventing water retention.
Figs are very high in dietary fiber, which makes them an ideal weight-loss aid.
Figs are an excellent source of potassium, a necessary mineral for the active woman to insure than her muscles work well and are cramp-free.
The high calcium content of figs promotes bone density and can guard against osteoporosis, another common female ailment.
Fruit fiber from figs has been shown to help prevent breast cancer in pre-menopausal women and also protects against age-related macular generation that leads to vision loss.
Whether or not you’re following a vegetarian or vegan diet is not at all the point. But some of the benefits mentioned above are. Tahini Sesame Paste and Fig Jam are plant-based superfoods in a jar that you really should try.
