A Step by Step Guide for Newbies: How to wear washable menstrual pads

You have finally decided to switch – or try out – washable menstrual pads. Now, you are probably wondering how to wear them correctly. Believe me, you are not alone and it is absolutely fine to make some “newbie’s mistakes”.

In fact, a girlfriend of mine who’s also a newbie to washable menstrual pads called me the other day and told me how stupid she felt when she found out that she had been wearing her menstrual pads inside out for two days in a row.

Well, nobody has to feel stupid about it because those “typical” newbie’s mistakes are easy to be made. You are a newbie after all. This is also the main reason why I am writing this step by step guide for newbies on how to wear washable menstrual pads.

Wearing washable menstrual pads takes some getting used to, in terms of wearing them during your menstrual cycle and taking good care for them in the first few months.

However, you’ll get used to them sooner that you might think it would be. Perhaps you would end up wondering why you didn’t switch to washable menstrual pads a lot sooner.

So, let’s go ahead and start with this simple step by step guide to wearing washable menstrual pads:

1. Wash the menstrual pads before using for the first time

It doesn’t matter whether they’re packed in a completely sealed off package when you got them. Always and always wash your washable menstrual pads before using them for the first time. Washing them at or below 30°C = 87°F would definitely help prolong the durability of your washable menstrual pads.

2. Wear a well and properly fitting underwear

Washable menstrual pads are made of at least two layers of fabric – whether it’s bamboo charcoal, bamboo fiber and/or minky – and therefore there are generally “heavier” than disposable menstrual pads. Wearing a menstrual pad on a well and properly fitting underwear gives you more comfort during your menstrual cycle.

3. Learn the inner and outer layer of menstrual pads

Washable menstrual pads are designed with various styles, colors and prints. Take a good look at this Bamboo Reusable Cloth Menstrual Pad. The cute printed side is made of leakproof PUL fabric and this is the outer layer of the menstrual pad. The light beige side is made of bamboo fiber and this is the inner layer of the menstrual pad.

4. Turn underwear inside out and inner layer face up

Turn your (well and properly fitting) underwear inside out and put your washable menstrual pad on it. Remember to put the inner layer of your menstrual pad face up. The first two photo’s are showing the inner layer face down and this is the incorrect way to wear your menstrual pad.

5. Fasten the snap buttons and ready to wear

Now, the only thing to do is fasten the double snaps, turn your underwear back and your washable menstrual pad is ready to wear.
