How to watch all your favorite TV and get rid of a cable bill

Some of my friends – and not to mention – my relatives find it still a little bit odd that I have had neither a TV or for years. I don’t even recall when exactly I managed to cut the cord and get rid of those two money-sucking technologies for good.

Yet, I do have access to all of my favorite TV, movies, and other shows whenever and wherever I feel like it without paying an expensive cable bill. The good news is that you could do the same and save a lot of money doing it.

Before I go ahead and show you how to watch all of your favorite TV and get rid of your expensive cable bill, let me be very clear that although cord cutting can save you a lot of money, but the fact is that it is not for everybody. It mostly depends on what kind of TV viewer you exactly are.

Let me put it bluntly that cord cutting is NOT for you if you:

  • Love to watch a wide range of live TVs.
  • Love to watch breaking news.
  • Love to have endless TV channels just for the sake of having it.
  • Hate TV spoilers.

However,

If you, like I am, are an on-demand-viewer or perhaps a binge-viewer together with your friends then cord cutting is definitely for you. The next questions are: is it really worth considering and how much money can you actually save?

What and how to subscribe to Amazon Video Add-on Subscriptions

How much money can you save with cord cutting?

The average cable bill is currently about $99 a month (and it keeps on going up). Lets compare it with my streaming service bills that I pay monthly. My streaming services includes:

  1. Netflix (2 screens at a time + HD available): $7.99 a month.
  2. Prime Video (as part of Amazon Prime’s yearly subscription): $1.65 a month*).
  3. Starz (Amazon Video add-on subscription): $8.99 a month.
  4. MUBI (yearly subscription $39.99): $3.33 a month **).

Please note:

*). Amazon Prime costs $99 a year, plus any applicable taxes and it includes five main services: FREE Two-Day Shipping, Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, Prime Photos, Prime Music, and Prime Video. It is $99 : 12 = 8.25 a month, and then $8.25 : 5 (main services) = $1.65 a month.

**). MUBI has two subscriptions: monthly $4.99 a month and yearly $39.99. It is $39.99 : 12 = $3.33 a month (save 33%).

So, I pay only about $22 a month, which means that I save money about $77 ($99 – $22) a month without missing any of my favorite TV. Of course, it is only one single comparison that doesn’t necessary represent your need for TV entertainment. Alternatively, you can also add SlingTV and Hulu Plus if you want to watch the best of live TV and next-day TV episodes, respectively.

How to watch all your favorite TV and get rid of a cable bill

How do you watch your favorite TV without cable?

As mentioned, I do not own a TV, let alone a smart one. I watch stream my favorite TV on my smartphones or my tablets, and if/when my friends come along to do some binge-watchings then we would watch them on my iMac. Everybody is happy!

To be able to stream thousand of TV series, movies and other shows you will need a fast internet connection and one or more of the following devices:

  • A (smart) TV.
  • A set-top boxes, including a Roku 4 Streaming Media Player.
  • A game console.
  • A blue-ray player.
  • A computer.
  • A tablet.
  • A smartphone.

I am convinced that you already own more than two of those devices at home. It is now up to you to decide whether cord cutting really is something for you. I, myself, have been a cord cutter even before I knew that it existed.

Cable bills keep on going up but it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to keep up. Not when there are so many streaming services that are more than willing to offer you more at modest prices.
