How to spend a long transit time at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)

When it comes to size, everything is big and large at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). A huge futuristic building that does represent neither its exotic Chinese culture nor its rich tradition all that much. It is enormously huge. So, whether you love it or hate it, its size demands some kind of respect.

I had about 8 hours transit time at the airport last year. The 8 hours time was too short to spend on touring outside the airport and was too long to spend on sitting down and waiting for my flight connection. This’s the point when the airport’s size actually comes in handy for it houses some great services and facilities to spend my transit time with.

1. Relaxing at The Traveler’s Lounge

My airplane landed at the airport in a very early morning. It was a long distance flight from Amsterdam that caused me more than just an exhaustion. So I needed to catch up my sleep, take a shower and have a good breakfast.

The nice lady who sat next to me in the airplane took me to a place called, The Traveler’s Lounge. It’s a pay-in lounge where you can relax and do whatever you need to do after a long flight. I paid a 3 hours private resting area where shower, bed, hot-meal, beverages and wifi are all included.

2. Shopping and enjoying Chinese art collection

Three hours later, I was well rested and fed. Feeling like a new born person, I then headed to its shopping area. I saw the most interesting, tempting and alluring gadgets and goodies over there. I didn’t buy anything though. I had already had so many stuff with me.

Afterward, I headed to its art gallery’s area. A quite place to be to taste a little bit of Chinese art collection. Other passengers seemed to enjoy the art gallery’s area as well because it’s not as crowd as the shopping area.

3. Having lunch at the food’s area

Time flies when you have fun. It was already lunch hour and the airport became very crowded and full. So I headed to its food’s area. It’s nothing short of a food around here and all you’ll have to do is choosing what you want for lunch.

When you’re not in hurry, take your time choosing a menu that you really fancy. As I did it. And I found Saboten restaurant that had the most interesting menu’s at the food’s area. I do not remember the menu’s name I had (see image above) but it was quite tasty. It’s indeed a better lunch menu than on the airplane.

4. Enjoying free wifi, workstation and free music

After having and fully enjoyed my lunch at Saboten restaurant, I went to the nearest internet workstation to catch up with some emails. Its wifi connection is free and available everywhere at the airport. It was, however, also great to know that I could use one of its internet workstations absolutely for free as well.

Before I knew, I had only one hour left before my flight connection took off. So I headed to my gate where a group of students was there and playing some classical music. A wonderful and entertaining surprise that the airport had to offer.

You see, being big, large, huge or whatever you want it to call it, has definitely its advantages. The Hong Kong International Airport has it and proves it.
