Museum aan het Vrijthof Maastricht

It’s been so long ago since I visited Maastricht in Limburg, The Netherlands. So, it seemed like a natural choice to visit this city last sunday. Maastricht is located in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg.

This city is also known as a city of history, culture, local folklore and education. A well-deserved name for I could almost feel the cultural atmosphere the minute we arrived at the Maastricht’s train station.

After having a delicious lunch, we visited the Museum aan het Vrijthof, which is located in the 16th-century Spanish Government building. This museum features some of the 17th- and 18th-century furnishings, Maastricht silver, porcelain, glassware, pistols, a collection of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch paintings and 20th-century paintings from some local artists (see image 1 – 3).

Our next visit was the Bonnefanten Museum, the place to be for exploring some of old masters and contemporary fine art. The museum also features a collection of medieval sculpture, early Italian painting, Southern Netherlandish painting and contemporary art (see image 4 – 7)

The city, the museums, the cultural atmosphere, the cuisine, the bridges and everything about Maastricht represent – and remain – as the city that is known for its history, culture, local folklore and education.

It’s so amazing how friendly and helpful the staff of the museums was. In fact, none of the museum guards was suffering from an unknown-but-exaggerated macho syndrome. It’s definitely one of the cities that I would love to come back to.

I have only one single sentence to conclude: Maastricht is a sophisticated city to feel the cultural atmosphere the minute you arrive.
